City of Bridgeport

City of Bridgeport website: http://www.bridgeportct.gov/
Community Profile of:

Connecticut's largest city has enjoyed a rebirth with the opening of new professional baseball and hockey venues and plans for corporate offices and new commerce and banking centers in the downtown area.

Incorporated in 1821 along the scenic shores of Long Island Sound, Bridgeport is one of the oldest urban communities in North America. As the largest manufacturing city in Connecticut, Bridgeport boasts over 500 industries and businesses, providing many products and services, as well as employment to its residents and surrounding communities. Located at the junction of Interstate 95 and Route 8, it has ferry service to Long Island and a stop along the Amtrak and Metro North railroad lines, with continuing service to Boston and Grand Central Station in New York City.

Bridgeport’s large and culturally diverse population enjoys a wide range of municipal services, including an extensive public school system. Nicknamed the Park City, Bridgeport has more than 25 parks and community gathering places, including Pleasure Beach, home to endangered piping plover birds and accessible only by foot from the mainland. The Beardsley Zoo has more than 300 species of animals, an indoor carousel and one of the largest greenhouses in Connecticut. It is the state's only zoo.

The city also is a thriving cultural center. The Barnum Museum has an exhibit about the long career of American showman P.T. Barnum, who housed his circus in Bridgeport during winters. At the Downtown Cabaret Theatre, spectators may bring their own picnic and sit at tables while they watch award-winning musicals in a renovated YWCA building.
